From Medium to Marketing: Why This Lake Tahoe Copywriter is Taking a Strategic Pause
When I started my copywriting journey, I envisioned myself writing beautiful words that would move people. That was it. That was the dream.

I didn’t envision:
Creating a website
Putting my face on the internet (gasp!)
Marketing myself like a product
Networking with unfortunate dead ends (better to know now, I say!)
The Gen X Discomfort with Self-Promotion
As a proud Gen X’er, I come from the era of passing out school photos with handwritten notes on the back. My college experience involved communication via shared landlines and whiteboard messages. “Text me” wasn’t in our vocabulary.
Old school is putting it mildly.

The Business Side of Creative Work
The thing about having your own copywriting business is that you don’t just get to write. You have to do the business part as well, and do it full throttle.
You have to put yourself out there, and I don’t know what I was thinking, but having others read and critique my work took a long time to get comfortable with. I know: weird for someone who literally wants to write for a living.
I think there is something about putting yourself out there and self-promoting. From my CPD certification course with The Copy Rebel, London, UK I realized what I was getting myself into, but not to this extent.
A Turning Point in Tahoe
As I believe there are no coincidences… a branding seminar on LinkedIn caught my eye. I attended and met a fabulous marketer, Brandi Brown from Tahoe Production House, who agreed to work with me.
As ego-bruising as having my self-made website and layout critiqued was, Brandi (not only a kick-ass professional but a very astute mom) had a firm yet gentle way of making me really think about my brand, who I am, and what I’m offering.
Career vs. Hobby: The Hard Truth
I’m planning on having copywriting as my career for the rest of my life. All I need is a working brain (pray I stay lucid!), a laptop, and an internet connection.
With Brandi’s UX/UI expertise and some firm yet gentle coaching, I need to focus on getting myself out there and helping soul-led businesses that are as like-minded as I am.

The Medium Question
When asked “does Medium get you any clients?” I had to regretfully answer “no.”
I thought writing on Medium and then blogging would help the SEO of my own site — a win/win, right?
Although this hasn’t been the case. As I reflect, maybe my keywords have been off? Maybe it just takes traction and time? But since I’m now able, from a confident soul perspective, to take the so-called leap, I need to transfer my energies to making this business work.
Writing as Practice, Business as Purpose
Writing every week has been paramount to developing my skills and has given me the confidence to put myself out there. Now I need to pivot and get serious about marketing and networking to create more than just a trickle of work.
A Pause, Not Goodbye
I love you all, my Medium & blog/newsletter followers… I will definitely be back. But for now, KPCopy needs to take off and soar. As I know in my soul-led business, it is intended to do.
See you on the other side of marketing land.
For now, this grass roots marketer is asking if you or someone you know are in need of a brand strategist and conversion copywriter or someone in business that just needs help with the words for their business, keep KPCopy in mind. 😉
